A Milestone in Thoughtful Guidance: Earning My CRTS® Certification

by Janée Krauth

A bright, sunlit, and modern living room in Western North Carolina representing a fresh start and a peaceful transition.

If you’ve been wondering whether it’s finally time to simplify your life , or if you’re helping a parent navigate that same internal dialogue , you know it’s rarely just about the house. It’s about the memories tucked into every corner, the garden you’ve spent years tending, and the heavy, often overwhelming question of what comes next.

For many families, the transition into a new chapter of life is one of the most significant shifts they will ever experience. It’s emotional, it’s logistical, and sometimes, it can feel like a mountain that is simply too high to climb alone.

I’ve always believed that my role as a Realtor in the Hickory and Catawba County area is to be more than just a person who puts a sign in the yard. I want to be a steady hand during those times of change. That’s why I’m so incredibly excited (and a lot humbled) to share some personal news with you: I’ve officially earned my Certified Relocation & Transition Specialist (CRTS®) certification.

This journey wasn’t just about adding more letters after my name. It was about finding better ways to support the people I care about most in our community. Combined with my SRES® (Seniors Real Estate Specialist) designation, I now have an advanced professional certification toolkit specifically designed to help older adults and their families navigate life’s next chapters with clarity, patience, and heart.

Beyond the "For Sale" Sign

Selling a home is often only one small piece of a much larger transition. When we talk about "moving," we’re often actually talking about "restructuring" a life.

Think about it, a move in your later years usually involves so much more than a moving truck. There is the delicate process of downsizing (or as I like to call it, rightsizing), the complexity of family dynamics, and the need to coordinate with estate planners or senior housing experts. It’s a lot for anyone to handle on their own.

I’ve spent the last few years working closely with families who were moving closer to loved ones, transitioning into senior living, or perhaps handling an estate after a loss. These experiences taught me that the traditional real estate model often misses the human side of the story.

My goal in pursuing the CRTS® certification was to bridge that gap. This advanced training focuses on the practical and emotional aspects of relocation. It means I’m better prepared to help you with things that don't always show up on a standard real estate contract:

  • Downsizing without being overwhelmed: Figuring out what to keep, what to pass on, and how to honor the history of your home without being buried by it.
  • Aging-in-place planning: If moving isn't the right choice right now, how can we make your current home safer and more comfortable?
  • Estate and transition resources: Connecting you with a trusted network of local professionals who specialize in senior needs.
  • Coordinating the move: Managing the logistics so you can focus on the emotional transition.

A curated, thoughtful approach to downsizing, focusing on keeping what matters most.

The Difference Between a Transaction and a Transition

In the world of real estate, there’s a lot of talk about "closings" and "transactions." But when you’ve lived in a home for twenty, thirty, or forty years, that word, transaction, feels cold and clinical. It doesn't capture the weight of the moment.

The CRTS® and SRES® designations are different because they are built on a foundation of empathy. While a standard real estate agent might focus primarily on the market value of the brick and mortar, my focus is on the transition as a whole.

As a Seniors Real Estate Specialist (SRES®), I’ve been trained to understand the unique financial and lifestyle needs of homeowners over 50. Whether it’s navigating the nuances of a 1031 exchange, understanding how a move affects retirement planning, or simply taking the time to explain the process in a no-pressure environment, that training is vital. I've built a team of trusted professionals with this in mind.  My goal is to be the "source of the source" so you don't have to figure it all out.

Now, with the addition of the CRTS® certification, I’ve expanded that knowledge into the literal movement of a life. According to the CRTS Board of Directors, this certification is recognized as a standard of competency in senior move management and relocation. It means I’ve committed to a higher level of professional standards, ethics, and communication specifically for senior transitions.

Together, these two designations allow me to offer what I call Thoughtful Guidance for Life’s Next Chapter. It’s about being a resource first and a Realtor second.

Why Specialized Knowledge Matters (Especially Now)

You might be wondering, "Janée, does it really matter if my agent has these certifications?"

It’s a fair question. The truth is anyone can list a house. But when you are dealing with a senior move, the stakes are different. The pace needs to be different. The level of detail needs to be much, much higher.

For example, many of my clients are managing what I call "the sandwich years." They are trying to help their aging parents transition into a safer living situation while also managing their own careers and families. It’s a stressful, heart-wrenching time.

Having a professional who understands family dynamics, who can act as a neutral, supportive third party during those tough conversations about "the big move", can be a game-changer. I’ve learned how to listen to the concerns of the adult children while ensuring that the parents always feel heard, respected, and in control of their own journey.

We also look at the logistics. Where is the new home? Is it a smaller house in Hickory, or perhaps a townhome that requires less maintenance? Or maybe it’s a transition to a senior living community? My job is to help you weigh those options without any pressure. I want you to feel confident in the path you choose, whether that path leads to a sale today, or a plan for two years from now.

A Supportive Network at Your Fingertips

One of the biggest benefits of working with a CRTS® professional is the access to a vetted network. I don't just "know a guy", I have spent time building relationships with people who share my commitment to senior care.

This includes:

  • Estate sale organizers who treat your possessions with dignity.
  • Senior move managers who can literally unpack your kitchen, so it feels like home the first night.
  • Elder law attorneys and financial planners who understand the local landscape.
  • Handypersons who specialize in making homes more accessible.

When we work together, you’re not just getting my expertise; you’re getting a whole team of people who are dedicated to making your transition as smooth as possible.

A Note of Gratitude

This milestone is one I’ve been working toward because I truly believe our community deserves this level of care. Every class I’ve taken and every exam I’ve passed has been with my clients in mind, thinking of the faces of the people I’ve sat with at kitchen tables and sharing coffee and stories.

I’m so grateful to everyone who has trusted me to be part of their journey so far. Moving is hard. Change is hard. But it’s also an opportunity for a fresh start, a simpler chapter, and a way to focus on what truly matters in life.

If you’re feeling a bit stuck, or if you’re just starting to look at the horizon and wonder what’s next, please know that you don't have to figure it all out today. Whether you need a full transition plan or just a simple conversation to sort through your options, I’m here.

There is no pressure: only support. Because at the end of the day, your home is more than just an asset. It’s the foundation of your life, and transitioning into the next chapter deserves nothing less than thoughtful, expert guidance.

Warmly,

Janée Krauth
