Create Your Haven: Sometimes the House Isn’t the Problem

One couple I worked with had already done the big-house chapter beautifully. They had lived on the lake, had the space, the view, the memories — and all the responsibility that came with it. What they wanted next wasn’t “less.” They wanted a home where most of daily life happened on one level, guests still had their own space, and leaving town for a few days didn’t require a mental checklist.

Another client had the opposite problem. Her current home was simply too small for the reality of her family’s needs. The conversation wasn’t about simplifying. It was about finding a layout that would make everyday life easier, with more usable space and the right rooms in the right places.

And then there are the families who aren’t ready to move at all.

I recently spoke with an adult daughter trying to help her parents sort through a complicated next chapter. One parent needed a higher level of care. The other wasn’t emotionally ready to make a move. There was no neat real estate answer — just a family trying to figure out what should happen first.

That is why I’ve become less interested in asking people:

“Are you ready to sell?”

And much more interested in asking:

“What do you want your life to look like next?”

The house comes after that.

That question inspired my recent feature in Haven Magazine.

For some people, creating a haven means simplifying.

For others, it means more space, a different neighborhood, fewer stairs, the ability to travel without worrying about the house, or simply knowing what options exist before they are forced to make a decision.

That philosophy is also why I created the Senior Life Transition Alliance — to give individuals and families a place to begin when the decisions involve more than real estate.

Sometimes the right answer is to move.

Sometimes it is to stay.

Sometimes it is simply to start planning.

Your haven isn’t defined by square footage. It’s the place — and the life — that fits you now.
